Behind The Lens

Location

This photograph was taken at West Midlands Safari Park, UK. It was shot from the drivers seat of my car across my wife and daughters lap.

Time

It was mid morning at the start of the season and although cold the sun was out. The park was surprisingly quiet that day, it's usually very popular.

Lighting

The sun was quite high and strong casting harsh shadows. You can't make adjustments when faced with an opportunity like this.

Equipment

This was taken with a Nikon D4 and 80-400mm lens that I had borrowed for the day. Hand held whilst balancing the clutch on the car :)

Inspiration

I love the safari park and so do my kids. We were having a nice drive around in our mini when we came round the corner to find these two guys fighting it out I front of our car. After the initial panic and fear of them crashing into us I lifted the camera out of my lap, half leaned across my wife and daughter and shot this single frame through the open window. It's such a fantastic place to get close to these magnificent animals.

Editing

I converted this image to black and white using Lightroom. Then burnt the clouds in the sky. The sun was really bright and I have to admit I was amazed by the dynamic range of the D4 that allowed me work on detail recorded in the brightest of highlights.

In my camera bag

I have not long changed from a Nikon D7000 to Fuji in an attempt to downsize the kit I carry. At present I carry a Fuji XE-2 and a 35mm f1.4 as its compact and great for taking photos of the kids. I have today received a Helios 58/f2 in the post as I am now looking to push my photography by using vintage lenses, shooting manual with no autofocus and limiting myself to 32 frames when I go out.

Feedback

Learn how to use your camera in manual mode without thinking about it so when that moment comes all you have to do is compose and press the shutter. When a moment like this happens your usually in an an awkward position and its unexpected but that makes it all the more rewarding when you get a keeper. This image was taken with a camera I could never afford but I believe it would have still been achievable with my own much cheaper gear. Being in the right place at the right time, having complete control of your actions and a desire to capture the beauty of the world around us is what makes great photos!
