Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in the Hluhluwe Imfolozi Park which is the oldest proclaimed reserve in Africa and home to the Big Five. The reserve has a large herd of elephant that roam freely.

Time

This was taken in the late morning/early afternoon.

Lighting

The day was overcast as a huge thunderstorm was approaching and it rained shortly thereafter.

Equipment

Just a camera, 70-300mm lens and good luck!

Inspiration

I had been watching the playful calf and its mother and was intrigued at how the small calf seemed to 'bounce' like a massively overgrown puppy before stopping to, what I assumed was, to suckle.

Editing

I just sharpened it and left the colour cast that was caused by an approaching thunderstorm as I liked it.

In my camera bag

Standard kit lens, a 70-300mm and 50mm. Also have a range of filters, spare batteries, speedlight and lens cleaning cloths.

Feedback

Sit still and watch quietly. When you see something that makes invokes an emotional response, then start shooting. Don't just shoot rapidly, you are not a machine gun. The care and thought you put into a composition shows.
