The Simien wolf (Canis simensis) is the rarest canid in the world. There are just 500 of them surviving, with the total population splitted in two subspecies of no more then 250 exemplars each. Biggest threats are the already reduced habitat, gradually invaded by men, farms and domestic livestock, hybridization with domestic dogs, and, most of all, the sicknesses that dogs are transmitting to them, such as rabies and canine distemper. Love this image! Execution is well and sharp all over and it shows the Simien Wolf in it's natural environment, clearly on the prowl! I am truly grateful to be able to see an image like this as the chances of me seeing one in the wild are not to high!

I took this photo during a dedicated Trip in the Bale mountains national park, an afro-alpine highland in southeastern Ethiopia.Time
I can't remember what time of the day it was, we saw the wolves more than one time and they are active during the whole dayLighting
The light was not so good but at least it was smooth enough to avoid dark shadows.Equipment
When talking about wildlife photography there is only one part of equipment that really makes the difference, a good telephoto lens. I use a Canon 500mm f4, old version.Inspiration
Actually i was there with the purpose of taking picture of this predator, which inspired me since i was a kid and saw it on the pages of an italian nature magazine that doesn't exists anymore.Editing
I did just the mandatory, since i always shot raw files, little adjustments to light, contrast, saturation and white balance, plus a bit of noise reduction to the backgroundIn my camera bag
When travelling i select the equipment depending on the destination, the kind of subject and sometimes the result i have in mind. When my purpose is wildlife photography i normally take two camera body, two telephoto lenses, one wide angle lens and one macro lens with me.Feedback
I find very hard to be specific, talking about a picture like this one. The hardest part was to be there and find the subjects. Luckily these wolves live in a relatively small area and are not so scared by human, so we remained up on the mountains for 4 or 5 days, encountering them a lot of times.
