Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photograph while vacationing on the Big Island, Hawaii. We went on a dolphin swim and I was very lucky to see several pods swimming peacefully as they rested.

Time

This photograph was taken in the early afternoon as we floated on the surface with snorkel gear and flippers. It is important to not move too much in order to not disturb the rest that the dolphins are taking during this time of day. I was very fortunate to have this particular pod come to the surface just behind me. I happened to turn around as they began to surface. and it was one of the most peaceful things I have ever experienced. I was amazed by the lighting this photograph captured and I think it captures the slow movement of the resting pod.

Lighting

I think the angle of the sun being almost directly overhead added to the glass-like shimmer of the underside of the surface of the water. I was particularly struck by the beautiful lines that the wave patterns threw onto the surface of the dolphins.

Equipment

The camera is an Olympus TG-820 that I originally bought as a fun camera for underwater shots. The salesperson who sold the camera to me (it was a floor model) told me that she owned one and that it was her favorite camera. I initially chalked that up to a sales pitch, but as I started using this camera, I have to say that I think she was very sincere. This camera is my go to for versatility in addition to the amazing pictures that I am able to capture underwater. Compact, versatile and high quality images make this camera a joy to shoot with.

Inspiration

I was inspired by the grace and fortune to be able to be so close to these majestic creatures.

Editing

I performed just a little post-processing contrast adjustment, but otherwise, the image you see is what I saw and what the camera captured.

In my camera bag

I normally carry the Olympus TG-820 and a Nikon D5200 with a Nikon 18-300mm zoom.
