Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in my home in Rijswijk, The Netherlands. I'm just a starting with photographing so I try to get as much as practice as I can get everywhere I go.

Time

As I recall, this photo was taken in the evening. We were watching TV and both of our dogs were sleeping under the blankets (dalmatians love to cuddle) next to us. One of the paws of the older dog was peeking out and I thought I could get a cute photo of it so I got up to get my camera. Obviously she woke up and lifted her head up, face half covered with the blanket.

Lighting

The lighting wasn't the biggest thing at that time, it was really a candid moment. I'm really glad that it actually turned out as good as it actually did. Didn't need all that much post-processing.

Equipment

I took the photo with my trusted Nikon D3100 with 18-55mm f3.5 lens.

Inspiration

Because it was a candid moment, once in a life time moment, nothing really inspired me at that moment, except that I just grabbed the camera and took it. She looked cute, half under the blanket. Only later I noticed that she looked like Lord Vader, when he was on Mustafar in Revenge of the Sith. As a big lover of the franchise, I couldn't be more happier.

Editing

I wasn't taking photos on RAW back then (I know, silly me). I changed the coloured photo into monochrome, which I personally prefer. And I tweaked here and there with the lighting settings but all in all, it didn't need all that much editing.

In my camera bag

I always pack my trusted Nikon D3100 with the 18-55mm 3.5 lens. On the side I have 50mm 1.8G, 55-200 4 and 70-300mm 4 telemacro lenses that go with me if I take the whole backpack with me. Latest purchase to the set if the TT560 Speedlite flash which has been a great addition. Also, you can't go anywhere far from home without an extra battery and a recharger. And batteries for the flash.

Feedback

Greatest advice for similar photos; get a funny looking dog with a great personality! No, really, take lots of pictures. Whenever and where ever. You'll never know when the great one comes along. This one was an accident, really.
