Behind The Lens

Location

Photo taken in Apache Junction, Arizona at the Lost Dutchman Mines. There is a small rest area set up with benches and various cacti.

Time

Noon.

Lighting

This is the top of the Barrel Cactus, looking downward into it.

Equipment

I shoot with a Canon PowerShot Elph 160. No flash, no tripod on this shot. Lens 5-40mm f.5-14

Inspiration

Even though it is cactus needles, I can see both spider-like image in a red web and a flowery image. I love the way the needles interact in this shot: color, markings, weave. The green backdrop of the cacti against the red and yellow of the needles made me think of Christmas. My sister is an amazing photographer. On her suggestion I did several close-ups of a variety of cacti while we were visiting there. I liked this one best to share on here.

Editing

No post-processing on this shot.

In my camera bag

This camera and my charger. I like to play with textures and colors in front of the lens. For example, I don't buy equipment I cannot carry with ease. So, sometimes I will place my sunglasses over the lens and then shoot, which makes for bolder colors and less glare, though I did not do that here.

Feedback

Macro shots are fun. Try to get as close to your subject as possible without injuring yourself in any way. Since I do not use extended lenses on my hand held camera, I need to get as close as I can for macro shots. Play with your camera as often as possible to teach yourself to be a better photographer. If you don't like a shot, delete it; but don't complain about 'the one that got away'. I usually wait until I load them into my pc for better viewing to decide what is a bad shot. Oh, and if you are disabled, and think you cannot be a good photographer, think again. Some of my favorite photos are when my hands jerked and the camera got away from me. I don't delete most of them. With a good photo editor, you can modify and play with your wobbly shots. While this photo carries the date, I have changed the camera setting to not have it on, as it distracts the viewer from the view.
