Eiffel Tower at the Paris Casino Resort, Las Vegas. This is a half sized replica of the actual Eiffel Tower in Paris, France. It's over 400 ft overlooking the Vegas Strip and the Bellagio Lago. The tower was but first and then came along the building (hotel and casino). Three of the legs can be seen in the casino.

the tower must be photographed a hundred times a day - you've captured this in a very unique way - love the processing too - great photo, well done.

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on Las Vegas Strip in front of the Paris Casio. I am a self-taught photographer who has had an interest in photography since 1980. This was my first trip to Vegas and I was overwhelmed with how over-the-top the strip is. So I wanted to capture a slice of this "extravagance" in a photo. As I looked up at the Eiffel Tower structure from the front sidewalk, I found my opportunity.

Time

The metadata on this shot says 18:26:55 (just about 6:27 PM). It was a mostly sunny, hot afternoon on April 1st. A fellow photog and I were walking out of the casino after purchasing our tickets for the Eiffel Tower tour. The Eiffel Tower replica, which is half the size is the real Eiffel Tower, towers over the Vegas strip and is hard not to notice – it's quite an imposing structure. I took this shot to feature how imposing it is. I shot this long exposure with the intention of making it black and white photo.

Lighting

The sun was high and the light was harsh. Because of the conditions, I knew from the outset that I wanted to shoot this photo for black and white processing. The good thing was that the sun lit up front of the Tower, which allowed me to capture the details of the architecture in the building and the Tower.

Equipment

I shot this photo with a Canon 5D Mark III using the EF16-35mm f/2.8L II USM lens at 25mm and f/8, a Formatt-HiTech IRND 16 filter, and a MeFoto carbon tripod. This is a 149 second long exposure at ISO 100. I set the camera up as low to the ground and pointed it up to get the most dramatic angle of feeling dwarfed by the Tower.

Inspiration

Everything on the Vegas strip is big, flashy, and over-the-top. I wanted to capture this larger-than-life feeling. Sometimes is difficult to communicate a feeling in words but as the old saying goes “one picture is worth ten thousand words”. I really enjoy photographing architecture and couldn’t resist the opportunity to shoot this structure. I didn’t care that people had to walk around me because I was set up in the middle of the sidewalk next to a trash can.

Editing

I used the iterative selective gradient masking (iSGM) workflow touted by Joel Tjintjelaar, who is a master at long exposure black and white photography. This was one of my first attempts using this method. Making masks from hard selections in Photoshop is at the heart of this workflow process. This is the most difficult step for me. You apply the masks later in the workflow. But, when the masks were created correctly, the rest of the workflow is easy and creative. There are some good YouTube videos out there that explain the iSGM workflow. Here is one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_1z939Z_aP0.

In my camera bag

What's in my bag varies depending on what I am shooting. I primarily shoot with Canon bodies, whether it’s my 5D Mark III or 7D. I bought a Sony Alpha 7M2 last year. I enjoy the Sony because it is lighter and is just as capable as my Canon bodies. Also I really like the crop feature on the Sony – it’s like having two cameras in one. I have any one of these bodies in my bag when walking around. For general shooting, I most likely have my 16-35 mm wide angle and a 28-135 mm zoom. However, if I am specifically shooting architecture I choose either my 8 mm or 14 mm Rokinon lenses in addition to my 16-35 mm. For landscapes, I bring along my 50 mm f1.4 prime and my 16-35 mm. For time lapse, I primarily rely on my 16-35 mm, and, for portraits, I use my 70-200mm f2.8. I have a Comlite adapter for fitting my Canon lenses on my Sony Alpha 7M2.

Feedback

Look around! Look up! Look down! Look behind! Use your neck to swivel your head. Seize the moment! Think about what you are feeling at the moment and try to capture it though a unique perspective. How many times have we been overwhelmed with the beauty of something but have a hard time capturing it? It is frustrating because the photo doesn’t convey what you felt. I am still working on this myself and don’t know if I will ever master it. But there is no reason not to try. You know you hit a home run when you rightly captured that moment. But you have to try and try again. That’s what it is all about.
