The textures formed as the lava on the crust of the lava lake in Puʻu ʻŌʻō crater forms and distorts then folds, breaks and vanishes are like snowflakes, fleeting and unique.

The silver textured portion in this image is newly formed and just cooling from its glowing molten phase to form black crust like that on the right. In a short period of time and right before your eyes areas can crack and be enveloped by the magma below with bubbles and splatters on the surface until it too cools and is consumed.

A wonderful and fascinating sight.
