This shot was taken in my favourite place to relax. That would be at our cabin in the mountains, Fyresdal in Telemark, Norway. Across the field there is a gorgeous litlle trail where you can find blueberries in late summer and chanterelle mushrooms early autumn. This was taken in winter believe it or not, we had a terrible lack of snow that year. It was interesting to see winter in other than white though for a change.Time
I had recently bought my new camera upgrade and couldn't wait to get out and take pictures. This was taken 31th December 2013. Being new years eve my children were resting as to be able to watch the fireworks, that gave me mummy time to scout my favourite spots and get in some shots. At 1.22 pm on my way down the trail i took this shot.Lighting
Midday is not always the best time of the day to shoot. But this beautiful trail has great coverage of all the tall trees and being winter the sun is low and mainly covered by clouds which allowed me to pull this off.Equipment
Canon EOS 5D Mark III, f/10, 1/80 sec, iso - 5000. 24-70mm lens taken at 24mm. Hand held and no other equipment was used.Inspiration
The trail is actually thick with trees on all sides the whole way apart from this small open area. It always catches my eye a little extra, the gradients, differnet rocks, colours and the way the light spills through the trees. I wanted to see if i could capture the beauty i saw each time also in my camera.Editing
This shot was processed in Lightroom. Being winter the colours were bland as was the sky. I was new to lightroom and used days on this, playing around trying every slider and brush. I settled on this version as i liked how the greenery in the foreground ended up with a painted look to it. Highlights and whites were pulled down which brought back the washed out trees and sky in the background and greens were pushed so i ended up with the saturation i usually see in summer. In my camera bag
Oh my, i have a Lowepro backpack which adheres to the motto 'always be prepared'. It contains all my canon lenes, 85 prime, 24-70 L, 70-200 L, 24-105, 100 prime. My Sigma 50mm art and a lensbaby for when i'm feeling whimsical. Two speedlights, a grey card, numerous extra camera batteries, sd cards and a reflector. And of course a shutter release cable, battery grip and filters, nd, pol etc. plus other small bits. YES, it weighs a ton, but on the rare occasions i have emptied to to contain what i thought would be the bare neccessities maybe just the 24-70 and 100 prime i end up kicking myself as i see a great motive and really needed my 70-200 for example. So now i always take the lot. Better to be safe than sorry!Feedback
I was given a tip once which i have found to be very useful when taking lanscape shots. It was as simple as 'get down low'. Bend your knees and get low to the ground. This perspective is fantastic for lanscapes. Don't be afraid to try something new, find your style.
