I took this photo from a pontoon boat after spending the day swimming with sea lion pups in the Galapagos. My first thought was, "wow, what an amazing shot." I have an eye for photography and I am constantly learning how to capture photos exactly how I see them.Time
This was a sunset in July 19, 2015 at 7:45pm. I took a risk having my camera out while bouncing on the waves, but it was worth it.Lighting
The oranges and reds really spoke to me. As we approached the ship, we were changing angles. I wanted to make sure that the eye of the sun was behind the ship creating a silhouette of sorts.Equipment
My camera was a Nikon D200, AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5G lens with a UV filter lens cover. I was holding it while placing my elbow on my knee. No other equipment was used.Inspiration
This was my first time using a DSLR camera and I wanted to see what it could do. I thought the photo captured the essence of a long day of adventure coming to an end.Editing
I didn't use any post-processing that I can remember.In my camera bag
I have my AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5G and an awesome AF-S DX Nikkor 35mm f/1.8G that is extremely versatile. A few other things I like to have around are pen lens cleaners, one of those short tripods that are moldable and can grab hold of tree limbs or light poles. I recently added UV filters that provide "sunglasses" for my lenses since I love to take photos of sunrises and sunsets. I've also been playing around with very long exposures that require less light and that's where the filters come in handy.Feedback
The Galapagos is an amazing place. Not only would you need your camera essentials, like those I've listed previously, you'll need to keep your eyes open. The scenery and the wildlife can present themselves in ways that require you to always look around as if your eyes are your camera. Keep your camera dry, battery charged and have a large capacity, extremely fast memory card to optimize your cameras abilities.
