A patient night waiting for aurora at a location I've visited many times. Not much was happening and it was a colder night so I kept myself moving, wandering along the frozen river to scope out some new angles.
I found this interesting ice formation with its own summit and I was sold for the night. I was incredibly lucky to shoot here on this night, as 2 nights later I returned and the ice had changed and flattened.
Although a subtle aurora glow, this is my favourite in that theme.

Location
This was taken at Lake Minnewanka, Banff. It's a popular viewing spot for the northern lights as it's accessible and far from the towns light pollutionTime
I took this photo around 1am. I'd been set up for about 3 hours before the green glow became present.Lighting
The moon was relatively bright this night. It was positioned behind me and slightly to the left. It was a great help in illuminating the foreground and mountains.Equipment
Nikon D610 with a Rokinon 14mm 2.8. I used a tripod setup as low to the ground as I could manage.Inspiration
Walking along the ice and rock near the lake I saw this unique formation in the ice. So I positioned myself to mimic the ice and the mountain and it was a wonderful symmetryEditing
Some slight changes in contrast and brightening of the ice was done with Lightroom. Nothing was added or removed from the composition itself though. In my camera bag
Apart from the camera and wide angle, I carry extra memory cards, an extra battery, gloves, a headlamp and led flashlight, a cable release, some snacks and water. Depending what I'm shooting I'll take other lenses in additionFeedback
Keep your eyes open. Look for an interesting hook and try it out. Go from a distance, up close, high angles and low angles. See what works for your eye and go with it. It takes patience so be sure to pack that too!
