Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in the hills of Zuid Limburg, Holland on a lovely late winters day.

Time

It was about 4 pm, I was walking through the hills and fields where I grew up long ago. A walk through memory lane...

Lighting

It was a typical grey Dutch winters day, without hard direct light. Quite easy to take a silhouette photo with nice visible details in the foreground.

Equipment

I took this photo with my Lumix DMC-TZ60, a wonderful small camera with a nice Leica lens. Easy to carry with you for those spontanious moments when you see something nice crossing your path.

Inspiration

These two young trees on the top of one of the many rolling hills in zuid Limburg, caught my attention because one tree was reaching out for the other one without ever being able to come any closer... The only way to touch each other will be to grow old and finally touching each others branches, high up in the sky. It kind of resembles the way I feel about this place where I grew up and people I have met... One day our branches will meet.

Editing

I did very little post-processing in Lightroom, I cropped the photo and turned it into Black and White with just a few minor adjustments.

In my camera bag

I don't have any equipment in my bag (yet) I am a beginning photographer and I am learning to use a camera, to look for the good light, composition and point of view. One day when I know how to use and set the camera well enough, I will start to think about a bag filled with technical things instead of the need to understand photography first...

Feedback

If you want to take a clean silhouette photo with full focus on your subject, be aware of the surroundings like the foreground and the sky. Avoid distractions and unwanted items in your frame... The negative space is very important in these kind of photos, that's why I think it's better to choose a large area of sky instead of a big foreground in order to emphasise the subject. The rule of thirds can be very helpfull to choose a nice cropping of your photo, in this case I played a little with that "rule" to get a nice composition. Rules have to be bent a little for the best results... I allways shoot a wider shot to be able to choose a nice cropping. I create more different croppings and choose the best one the day after, so I can have a fresh look at them!
