Behind The Lens

Location

I found this old pair of workman's boots in an old derelict and abandoned shed in the NSW village of Sunny Corner. The home-made set of shelves that the boots were sitting on appeared to be much newer than the shoes themselves and this contrast was one of the things that caught my attention.

Time

I had spent some time looking around this old mining village before finding the old shed and the boots. By this time it was close to noon and the sun was high in the sky and casting almost no shadows, but this didn't matter for this shot as there was ample light illuminating the inside of the shed just by opening the rickety old door.

Lighting

Because the only available lighting was what was coming in through the open door it was strong and even and I liked the way it cast a fairly horizontal shadow of the boots onto the wood behind the boots.

Equipment

This image was taken with my Canon 10D, on a Manfrotto tripod. The camera settings were F9 at 1/25 sec with ISO at 200.

Inspiration

There were several things that I liked and these included the old boots themselves and the contrast they made with, still old, but much newer shelf that they were on plus the shadow they cast onto the wooden panelling behind them.

Editing

About all I did in post-processing was to crop the image into a square format and to tweek to brightness just a little.

In my camera bag

Since taking this image I have changed cameras and I now have a Canon 760D. I have a variety of lenses in my bag ranging from 10mm ranging all the way up to 600mm. Some are prime lenses whilst others are zoom or macro. I usually carry these in a large bag and decant to a smaller bag depending upon what I think I will need for a particular shoot. Wherever possible I use a tripod.

Feedback

Don't just look at your subject, look at its surroundings. Do they add to the story? Are they necessary to add interest to the subject? Keep the image simple, do not include anything that is distracting.
