This photo was taken on Brighton Beach on the edge of Lake Superior in Duluth, Minnesota. I had picked this spot to shoot this particular sunrise and when I arrived I could not have been more excited to see the ice had stacked overnight.Time
This photo was taken around 7:15 am on Valentine's Day 2015.Lighting
On this particular morning I woke up late. I looked out my bedroom window and could see the amazing color starting to develop in the sky. I quickly rushed out the door and grabbed my gear. Nature provided all the lighting that I needed and I could not have asked for more.Equipment
This was shot with a Nikon D5300 with the kit 18-105mm lens. The lake ice was my tripod.Inspiration
I live in the amazing city of Duluth, MN and was inspired by the many great photographs that are taken of the amazing sunrises in the winter. I decided it was time that I go take a few for myself. The rest of the story just fell into my lap and made the best of a great situation.Editing
I didn't really have to do much post-processing. Mostly I just lightened the shadows, brought down the highlights, and upped the contrast a hair.In my camera bag
Since taking this photo I have upgraded. I now normally carry a Nikon D750 and a D5300. I also always have a Tamron 24-70 f2.8, a Tamron 70-200 f2.8, and a Rokinon 14mm f2.8. I also never leave without my Vu circular polarizer.Feedback
There is no place like Minnesota's North Shore in the winter. Even in the most bitter of -40 degree f days you can't beat it. The scenes of lake smoke and the potential to get stacking ice late in the year keeps every photographer in the area on their toes. Many regard Minnesota as a summertime destination. If you want to capture something similar I challenge you to make a wintertime destination as well.
