Behind The Lens
Location
This was a nearby farm. One of the stables was being mucked out when I heard the cockerel! He is a very cheeky and confident chap and struts about and definitely rules the roost! I heard him crowing and turned around to see him wandering around the yard. Joey, the horse in the picture was fascinated, so I waited until the cockerel was where I wanted him to be in my picture and clicked.Time
This was taken at around 4.30pm. The horses were starting to look for their dinner and were happily looking over the doors of their stables.Lighting
The sun sets behind where I am standing so the light always falls nicely on Joey and his stable.Equipment
I handheld my Canon 5d mk 3 with the 24-105mm lens on it. I never use flash around the horses for obvious reasons, and a tripod would get in the way of people wit wheelbarrows mucking out!Inspiration
I love the look of horses and I like a nice rustic country shot, preferably ones which tell a story, as I think this one does. The expression of the horse is priceless as the cockerel is in mid-crow. It is the kind of shot I had been hoping to take for a while and I kept taking my camera to the yard in the hopes of capturing something charming.Editing
I used HDR on this shot to bring out the detail and make the look more rustic. Often it can look overdone but on this occasion, I got the look I intended.In my camera bag
I have my Canon camera body, my 24-105 lens, a 70 - 300mm lens and a 50mm lens. I like to carry a monopod too as it's lighter than a tripod.Feedback
Unsurprisingly my advice would be that with animals, be prepared for the unexpected and if at first you don't succeed, keep trying! :-)
