Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in my home town of Fargo, ND. I was on assignment for the 48 hour Made in the FM photo exhibit at the Memorial Union Gallery. This image was chosen along with one other photo I took to be amoung the 40 images that were printed and hung in the gallery show this past March.

Time

It was about mid day. I was walking downtown with my sister when I noticed the reflections.

Lighting

This image was taken with natural light. This was one of my favorite images I took in the 48 hours of the project. I loved the colors in it. Browns, blacks, blues and reds. They complemented each other nicely in the sunlight. Playing with light is fun. I always pay attention to shadows and reflections.

Equipment

I used a canon T3i with a 18-55mm lens.

Inspiration

I was participating in the Made In The FM photo project. It gave me an opportunity to see my home town differently. There's art everywhere and sometimes life can get so mundane that we don't pay attention to the little bits of beauty that surround us everyday.

Editing

I did a little color enchantment in Lightroom cause I wanted to really express the "painted" part of the title for the image. Other than that the photo is as shot.

In my camera bag

I usually have my 50mm 1.8 lens on my camera. I take a lot of band photography and venues don't always have the best lighting so that's usually my go to. I also always have my 18-55 mm, even just this kit lens amazes me by the quality of image I get while photographing landscapes. In addition to that I carry a 75-300 mm which I mostly use for nature and street photography.

Feedback

My advice for capturing an image like this would be pay attention to the time of day you're out shooting. Also, where the sun is. The way the sun hits objects at certain times of day can be inspiring. Different shadows, different reflections, different lines, different colors. Use the Suns process in the sky to make your colors pop. Capture the shadows and reflections you find interesting. Always be aware of the little bits of beauty that surround you.
