This photo was taken in a corn field near my home in northern Indiana.Time
This photo was taken during the early evening hours. It was part of an assignment for a class that I was taking at the time. The assignment was to take a creative environmental portrait. And the photos had to be turned in the next day so I didn't have a whole lot of time to get accomplished what I wanted.Lighting
The typically overcast autumn skies of Indiana with rain mixed in, was all of the lighting which I had to use for this image. I decided that the darker natural light would work well with a black and white image.Equipment
This photo was taken with only a Canon Rebel xsi, with a 75-300mm lens, mounted on a tripod. No flash or any other equipment was used.Inspiration
A class project to take environmental portraits was the reason for the initial purpose of this photo, and one of the photos had to be a self portrait. I did not want to do a simple self-portrait, so i set out to find some other interesting way to compose the photo. At the time I was interested in levitation photos, and i had also seen a lot of portraits with umbrellas as props, so i thought that it would be fun to combine the two ideas and try to make an image in which it appeared that i was being carried upwards by my umbrella.Editing
I typically do not like to much editing. That part is not nearly as much fun for me as searching and capturing the photos that I take. I did however convert the image to black and white, and did some minor adjusting of highlights, low-lights and contrast. In my camera bag
I usually do not carry much with me when I take photos. I only have my Canon Rebel xsi, a prime lens, and a 75-300mm lens. I don't believe that i should need to have a large assortment of bodies and lenses and other accessories to capture an image. Sure all of that helps. But I like to keep myself challenged by only using my basic camera and couple of lenses.Feedback
The only advice that I have to give is to just get out there and try new ideas. Some may work and some may not, but you can't improve if you don't try. I am still very early into my photographic journey, but I feel that if you have an open mind to new ideas, styles, and concepts, you can achieve what you are aiming for. Keep your eyes on the lookout for what you find to be worthy of capturing and freezing in time. Opportunities are everywhere, but you can not find them if you aren't looking.
