Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in Ireland. The lake in the photo is one of the lakes you can find in the Killarney National Park, a place where any time of the day you breath peace and tranquility.

Time

I discovered this place at the beginning of my tour of the Ring of Kerry. It was noon and the light was not good, so I decided to return on the evening hoping light conditions were good enough. Fortunately, light at sunset was very nice, accentuating the feeling of calm and tranquility. This was taken on March 22, 2016 at 19:07.

Lighting

All lighting in this picture is natural light from sunset. The quality of the light was good, just a little adjustment in WB was done in order to cool ambient light and transmit the sense of tranquility that I was experiencing at that moment.

Equipment

This was shot on a Nikon D750, with tripod, remote shotter and a NiSi CPL. The circular polarizing filter has become for some time an indispensable accessory in my landscape photographs. In this case, it made possible to eliminate the reflections in the foreground and enhance contrast in the clouds, creating a more interesting image from my point of view.

Inspiration

One of my uncles lived in Mallorca and he used to make beautiful paintings of waterscapes with boats in them. When I was there in summer, I remember him sitting in from of the coast, with his easel and his brushes, painting but overall, enjoying the moment. Therefore, I could say that my major inspiration when I took this photo was my uncle. In general, landscape paintings of some famous painters like Claude Monet, Albert Bierstadt, Rubens, William Turner… are inspirational to me. I think painting is a very great source of inspiration and learning to all photographers in general. Of course, great classic and contemporary photographers are a source of inspiration that helps me to grow as a photographer.

Editing

I always use Lightroom to post-process my pictures however, I don´t like to spend more than 5 or 10 minutes processing a photo, of course, there are some exceptions, for example the B&W "London" or "Tower under the starts" pictures that have some local adjustments that took me more time. What I like most is being with my camera immersed in the landscape, so if I have the chance I prefer to go somewhere to take pictures instead of be at home in front of the computer. For this particular photo, I applied lens correction, lifted shadows, added some contrast, some sharpening and used the LR gradient filter utility to obtain darker and cooler tones in the clouds. No more than 10 minutes of work.

In my camera bag

Inside my bag, I always carry my Nikon D750 body and the Tamrom 15-30mm f2.8, it is a heavy piece but I love it for landscape photography. Then I pack a second lens, a Tamron 24-70mm f2.8 for general purposes. I pack my Haida 150mm filter holder too and three different filters, Haida ND 1000, Nisi CPL and Nisi GND 8. I carry a remote shotter and a lightweight carbon fiber tripod. I also usually carry tissues to clean my lens when it is raining.

Feedback

In the case of landscape photography, the most important thing to me is to wait for the right moment, the hour when the light is the best. Usually this moment don´t last too much, so you must be ready or you lose the opportunity. The sunset and sunrise are my favorite moments to take photos because of quality of light, for this reason is important to be in place with sufficient time to prepare your shot: search for a god position, prepare all the material and compound the photo. No less important to me is to enjoy taking the photos into harmony with nature, that way is much easier for me to be able to transmit the sensations that I was experiencing and the beauty of the landscape.
