Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo and 4 others on my kitchen table which sits by the window of apartment.

Time

It was around late morning to midday in March

Lighting

The lighting was all natural unobstructed sunlight. I had the advantage of light coloured walls and tabletop.

Equipment

It used a standard cellphone camera, no special lighting. I placed the glass in a variety of locations around the table to see what effects I could get using natural sunlight refraction and shadows. I was pointing my camera down on an angle for this particular shot.

Inspiration

This was part of a challenge to myself to see if I really could take decent quality photos. I did this prior to purchasing my first DSLR. I now own a Canon Rebel EOS 5 kit. fyi: I am now planning to do a follow up project using my Canon kit to see what the difference in image quality will be.

Editing

I did some cropping only nothing else.

In my camera bag

My standard equipment now is a Canon Rebel EOS 5 with standard zoom lens, and camera bag. I am on the hunt for a tripod.

Feedback

The photo was part of a self-guided project to see what quality of images I could get using an average phone camera. I ultimately realizes two things from this: One: I really enjoy photography; two: It is true what the experts say that it is important to have an eye for a good photo, instead of relying only on your equipment. Other examples of this project include a black and white of a tree root, and a few of my wife. Any image that does not show Canon as the equipment used on my viewbug.com page. I have also been reading articles from a variety of print and online magazines and guidebooks. The most important piece of advice I can give is to remember to have fun and to use your instincts in searching for that great shot.
