Siksika Traditional powwow 2016. (Northern Blackfoot).
This was my first time shooting a powwow and the first time that I decided that I wanted to pursue photography. I have an old Canon 7D I bought from my brother and I borrowed a 70-200mm 2.8 and fired away until my memory card was full. I wish I could have had this as a RAW image but my card was too small to justify the higher resolution. I was lucky to get this shot and did not realize I had taken it until reviewing the images.

Love the focus on the beautiful eyes, but yes also capture the movement. Superb.

The color composition with the focus on the subject's eyes is extraordinary.

I honestly had no idea what I had until I started culling the images. I was very lucky to get the shot.

This by far is the best powwow image I have ever seen. The capture of the eyes through the shawl fringe is priceless.Well Done.

I shot this image at the Tradiitional powwow on the Siksika Nation (Northern Blackfoot), located in Alberta Canada. This was a special day for me because it was the day I was inducted into the powwow cirlce by my Uncle, Bert Crowfoot. I will always remember this day because this was the day I decided to pursue photography and a love affair was born.Time
I shot this image in the evening of a Friday in May. I had gotten off work late and was worried I would be late as I knew my Uncle had driven several hours to attend and shoot the powwow with me. Thankfully he waited long enough to let me borrow some glass and a flash to let me shoot my first powwow.Lighting
I struggled with getting the white balance right in the camera, and I was very inexperienced. I did not know at the time how to change the white balance on my camera for the flouresent lighting from the lights. Another factor complicating the situation was the fact that natural light was pouring in frrom side doors and a skylight of sorts desgined to mimic the inside of the top of a tipi. I threw an external flash on my camera and opened my aperature to allow as much light in as possible.Equipment
This image was shot with my Canon 7D that I had purchased second hand. I borrowed some glass (70-200mm 2.8) and an external flash mounted on a monopod for stability and comfort.Inspiration
I have a strong desire to represent First Nations in both a documentary and candid style. I am bothered by images I see of people portarying Native Americans as caricatures and uncerimoniously donning headdresses without demonstrating proper respect. I want to share my culture in a postivie manner and document the Native American experience which continues, and to remind people that we are still here and should not be regulated as a footnote in the history books.Editing
At the time I shot this image I did not know the difference between a jpeg and RAW image and I was not sure of how to even fix the red eye in my subjects eyes. My Uncle saw the image on facebook and edited the red eye out the best he could. I have since learned how much more flexibe RAW files have to offer and shoot only RAW.In my camera bag
Right now I have a 7D Mark lll, which I find perfect for shooting the quick moving actions of a powwow. 10fps is pefect for my uses. I love the 70-200 2.8, it is extremely versatile and gives me the extra reach with the 1.6 crop factor. Other than that I lean towards prime lenses. I have a 50mm and an 85mm which I love. I use both a black rapid sport camera holder which works great as well as a Peak design strap that is very well made.Feedback
I would say to capture an image like this, I would set my aperature to 2.8, and use a zoom lens (70-200). Shoot RAW so you can edit the exposure later on depending on the lighting. Set your camera to AI servo and focust on a single point using back button focus. Flash is optional depending on the light and try to envision where your subject will be, not where they are. Be tenaciousl and dont be afaird to push your camera to the limits.
