Location
This photo was taken in Bruges, Belgium. We didn't have much of a plan as far as location goes, we just walked around the town and looked for suitable backdrops.Time
This photo is from halfway through the shoot, and is the second outfit change. At this point we were in the afternoon, with the October sun still somewhat high in the sky.Lighting
The lighting is actually a balance of natural light and flash. For this shoot I preferred an extra pop of light on the model, and the extra sparkle added to the eyes created by the catch light of the softbox.Equipment
I used a Canon 6D, tamron 28-75mm lens, & Canon Speedlite 430EX on a tripod with the Phottix Easy-up Softbox as a modifier.Inspiration
After shooting alt models for a while, I wanted to shoot something more editorial for my portfolio. Skye Varuna, with her fashion model look, was the perfect model for this shoot. I didn't completely leave my alt model shooting behind though, but instead I combined latex with fashion for the styling of this shoot.Editing
I always retouch and colour grade my photo's. The first step is the usual skin retouching and any removal of distracting elements. I'll also dodge and burn parts of the image to shift around the light so that it guides the viewers eye to the part of the image which I want to be noticed first. After all that comes the colour grading, though sometimes I do reverse and play around with the colors first. Colour grading is where you put your style on a photo, and I always take my time to test out various colors. In this case, before the shoot had even happened, I already knew I was going to shoot with black & white intent. In my camera bag
What I pack varies, and I always pack too much. Of course I'll take my Canon 6D, and my Tamron 28-75mm lens because it's a workhorse lens suitable for various situations. I'll usually also pack my Canon 85mm f1.8, because it's the sharper one out of the two. But I admit that half of the time I forget to use it, even though I do have it with me. If i'm going on an indoor location, where i feel I might need studio light, I'll pack 1 Elinchrom d-lite rx 4 with the standard softbox. I have a camera backpack from Manfrotto that holds my camera, several lenses, my lamp head, with some extra room left to pack a small makeup kit or a few accessories. The only thing I can't fit in my backpack is the light stand.Feedback
If you're interested in shooting editorial style photo's, it's all about the team you work with. The model is very important, you need to cast a model that has a suitable look for your concept. Personally I prefer models with an edgier look, instead of commercial, pretty faces. A stylist who can pull a few outfit changes for you is also a great team member to have. But if you don't have a stylist you can always try to borrow some things from friends or boutiques. And of course there's the make up and hair artist to finish up the whole look.
