Behind The Lens

Location

Poolburn, Central Otago, New Zealand. The scenery alone is dramatic as its where they filmed parts of Lord of the Rings, then this gorgeous falcon landed in the scene, I had to try capture it with the wild tussock without scaring him away.

Time

It was after midday with bright sun driving to a family fishing spot when we suddenly noticed the falcon on a fence not too far from the road.

Lighting

A clear still day, bright sky, I had no time to set up anything so I had to get an angle where the sun was behind me, fortunately the falcon stayed there long enough for me to get in the right spot before flying off.

Equipment

My all time favourite camera, Panasonic FZ1000, hand held shot in manual, 35mm lens 800s f/8 iso125

Inspiration

I noticed the falcon sitting there scanning the area, it was a safe spot to stop so slowly got out of the car and crept closer and closer. The hawk kept an eye on me while still looking across the landscape for prey but let me quietly snap away

Editing

I took this shot in raw and just did basic adjustments in Photoshop (highlights, shadows, levels)

In my camera bag

My FZ1000, nd filter, raynox-250 macro lens, tripod and the all important lens cloth

Feedback

Keep an eye out for that postcard shot. Be patient and try your best not to disturb the wildlife, if you wait long enough nature will reward you!
