Location
This photo was taken in a small beach called El Maculis located in El Salvador.Time
The time of the day was around sunset, just after the golden hour ends and the blue hour starts.Lighting
I decided to shoot this part of the beach because the light was coming from the side. I like how the rocks look with side lighting and I think it works great in black and white.Equipment
I used a Nikon d7100 and a wide angle lens, but the most important part of equipment was an ND filter and the tripod to achieve the long exposure.Inspiration
I always take my camera with me when I'm on vacation. This time I was very lucky because the tide was low enough for the rocks to be visible during the golden hour. I found this small rock formation that was surrounded with just enough water and thought this will be a great opportunity to use the ND filter. Took many different shots until the light was completely gone and this one was my favorite.Editing
I used the curves tool with different masks to make the sky a little bit darker and add some contrast to the the rocks. I used the camera raw shadows slider to recover some detail because the initial raw file was under exposed. In my camera bag
I have in my bag a Nikon d7100, a wide angle lens, a tripod, an olympus TG 3, my phone, different ND filters and a water bottle and a towel to clean my hands.Feedback
1. Have a bottle of water and a small towel to wash your hands, wet sand sticks to everything and you can easily damage your Nd filters if you are manipulating them with your hands full of wet sand. 2. Be careful when you have your camera on your tripod and the waves are coming in, they will knock your camera if you get distracted. 3. I like to explore the beach a day before shooting. I grab a cold beer and take longs walks with my phone in hand to shoot some possible compositions. 4. Nd filter for long exposures and a tripod are a must.
