We arranged this shoot for abit of portfolio work with Amy from Boss Models Johannesburg, we had Deborah Barnard doing the styling. I shot it at my studio in Johannesburg, South AfricaTime
This was shot in the afternoon, probably at about 14:00/15:00Lighting
The fact that this was shot with just beautiful natural light, using window light and a reflector to get this setup looking perfect and keeping smooth, soft light transitions.Equipment
I shot this on the Nikon D810 with my trusty 85mm F1.8G, a beautiful combination for portraiture, I find that the more natural compression of the 85mm focal length really helps keep an intimate yet realistic feeling to portraits.Inspiration
We were inspired by pastel colours and the gentle tones in colour and light were maintained throughout the shoot. Amy has beautiful platinum hair which worked amazingly with the wardrobe and backdropEditing
Keeping the skin natural and maintaining her freckles were of absolute importance to me while retouching this image. Using frequency seperation to reliably control exactly which textures and blemishes to heal, as well as dodging and burning to correct any patchiness and smooth light transitions over rough areas of skin.In my camera bag
I now have different gear to what I used to create this image, after my gear was stolen I replaced all my Nikon gear with Canon. I now shoot with the Canon 5dsr, Tamron 15-30mm f2.8, Sigma 50mm F1.4 ART and Tamron 70-200mm f2.8 VC. I use a Camranger and an Ipad for critical work and always carry around my SpyderCheckr Color Passport, its invaluable in color critical work.Feedback
This shoot was all about keeping it simple, You wouldnt need fancy gear to recreate this setup. I had all my profoto lights setup and actually ended up turning them off and using the natural light because it just had a unique beauty and softness that often strobes just fail to capture. Im a strong believer of being in the right place at the right time, sometimes you need to create the right situation and sometimes it just kind of happens!
