Behind The Lens

Location

My own photography studio, actually the previous one. We recently moved to a new location.

Time

In the afternoon

Lighting

Beautydish put quite high, one light on the background put low.

Equipment

Canon 5DMIII, prime 24-70mm 2.8, Bowens 500w studio flashes

Inspiration

It was an assignment for a club i used to work for. This amazing DJ was being celebrated his anniversary being a resident for 20 years at Cafe d’Anvers (a pretty legendary club in Antwerp Belgium). Sadly this legendary guy passed away in 2019. There was no one more loyal or drenched in music, serious about his music. He wanted to bring joy, fun and music to the people, no matter how small or shabby the venue. There is no one who lived and breathed music like he did. DJ Smos was an Icon in the scene, but also a fun loving lovable guy, a humble rebel with a big heart. Always up to dj at any party or a bit of mischief and a laugh. It is one of the shoots i will always fondly remember and i loved connecting with him during this portrait session. Rip Smos, we will remember you forever!

Editing

Adding vignet and putting the image in Black and white, basic sharpening. Not a lot for my habits. This portrait benefitted from being quite raw.

In my camera bag

Camera, 50mm 1.2, 24-70mm, 70-200mm 2.8

Feedback

The light is simple, so this look could be achieved with a desk light, to get this depth of field, you can also use a flash on pilot light.
