Location
A dream trip of mine has always been to go to Alaska to photograph the vastness of that area and the wildlife. The colorful cliffs and the glacial blue waters lend wonderfully to any scene. The eagles there are gorgeous and very active, fishing the waters off the coast.Time
Photographers know how important light is. This shot was taken in early evening light!Lighting
The lighting can be difficult when shooting along waterways. I try to position myself to where the sun would be at my back or nearly so to try to avoid shadows when something flies in front of me. I also tend to shoot early morning or early evening.Equipment
This image was shot with the Nikon D750 and a Nikkor 28-300 lens, handheld, no flashInspiration
Alaska with it's vastness, gorgeous coastal cliffs and glacial blue waters is home to a lot of magnificent wildlife. The eagles are large and their agility is unequaled when it comes to fishing. I wanted to combine the beauty and agility of the eagle while fishing with the wonderful colors of the glacial blue waters.Editing
I don't do much post processing on my wildlife images, mostly some slight cropping to format the image. In my camera bag
I always shoot with my Nikon D750, and have a Sigma 150-600 sport generally attached to the camera. But depending on what I end up shooting, I also carry a Tokina 17-35mm f4 wide angle lens, a Tamron 70-200mm f 2.8, and a Nikkor 28-300mm along with a 50mm Nikkor f1.8. I carry a Nikon speed light sb910 as well.Feedback
When photographing bald eagles along any water because of the changing light conditions and the speed at which the eagle's fly along waterways and channels I tend to shoot in manual, exposing for the white on the eagle and adjust my exposure primarily off the shutter speed to ensure that I am getting a sharp, crisp image.
