Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at a bird hide near my home. I go there when I want to get out of my studio for a bit of fresh air, it is so peaceful there.

Time

This happened early in the morning, around eleven. The Kingfishers look very busy that time in the morning, so I sat and I waited.

Lighting

The sun cast a shadow from the bird hide in the morning, so I had to bump up the ISO a bit to get a faster shutter speed without sacrificing to much depth of field. I do like it that way, as the direct sun can be harsh on the water.

Equipment

I used my Nikon D5200 with a 200 mm lens and a bean bag for support, from the seating in the bird hide.

Inspiration

The Kingfishers.

Editing

Not that much, I only used unsharp mask, cropped the image a bit and increased the exposure about half a stop.

In my camera bag

For fast moving objects or animals I use my Nikon D5200, with a 55-200mm kit lens. I also use the Nikon 50mm 1.8 lens. For my studio and landscapes I use my Fujifilm GFX 50 s, with a 32-65mm lens, I use the Cambo Actus mini view camera with the GFX and tree lenses. Cambo Actar 24mm for landscapes and architecture, the fujinon 65 mm and Schneider 150 mm for studio work. A sturdy manfrotto tripod and a Lowepro camera bag.

Feedback

You have to be patient. Become familiar with the area and the birds habits. I noticed they like catching fish and sit on that little branch, so I kept going there and I kept my focus on that branch and just waited for the action to happen. The Kingfisher is very fast so you have to stay at a state of readiness. I missed a lot of awesome shots because I got a bit bored.
