Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken at The Holiday Inn Atrium in Singapore. I'm a self-taught cityscape photographer so every single shot was a new discovery to me.

Time

This was taken on the March 23, 2016 at 5:03PM. I was actually shooting with my friend and we wanted to take this shot around 6 to prevent the harsh light coming from the ceiling but we had other plans ahead so we had to snap and go.

Lighting

The lighting as you can see has a distinct gradient and I was intending to draw the viewer's attention to the floors of the hotel. While I was there, the lower floors of the hotel had minimal exposure to light so I had to over-exposure the ceiling a little so that I can draw out more detail from the lower floors.

Equipment

This was shot on a Canon EOS 6D with a 24-105 F/4 L lens. No other equipment was involved.

Inspiration

During the month of march, I was really interested in shooting the views of hotels after looking through Google Maps for inspiration. And so, I planned a couple of hotels to explore due to the unique shape and design each and every hotel has. Originally, this hotel's exterior told me that the interior would look kind of dull due to it's cylindrical structure. However as I stepped into the foyer, I was shocked when I looked up with such a view instead.

Editing

I always post process my photos so that I can immediately draw the viewer's attention towards what I want them to notice. In this particular case, I only had to increase the clarity and sharpness while bringing down the exposure in the middle of the image using an adjustment brush in Lightroom.

In my camera bag

I normally tug in my 24-105 with me along with the nifty fifty 50mm f/1.8 STM from Canon. I'll then pack my Canon EOS 6D body and finally a tripod from Giottos in the event that I have to shoot at night or with low light. I started with the 6D Kit and haven't had the money to upgrade my gear. However, I'm planning to purchase a 20mm f/1.4 Art Lens from Sigma soon.

Feedback

If you're based in Singapore just like me, chances are you'll feel that Singapore is small and seeking for a unique angle of view would be seemingly impossible. However, if you have free time to spare at home, always head over to Google maps to explore the least explored areas in the country. This method that I've been following has really helped me to seek out for unique places in Singapore to shoot. Being a cityscape photographer, you'll have to expect that a single shot a day is more than productive because the details of every part of the photo must be well observed. If you don't get the shot you want because of the weather, always head back to the location another day because you'll want to bring the best out of that place. Have faith in yourself and don't give up if the weather is bad, always make a few attempts.
