This image was made in Nairobi National Park, Kenya. While traveling for a month through Africa, going on a day safari was definitely one of the highlights! This male rhino was getting territorial so our driver had to stop and back away slowly in order for it not to charge.Time
Early morning we woke up to ride the bus to the entrance of the park. From 7-12 we drove around the park searching for as many animals as we could. This rhino and the lioness were two of the highlight for sure.Lighting
Fortunately the clouds were out, which allowed for soft light to illuminate the wildlife and avoid casting harsh shadows.Equipment
The image was shot hand held with a Canon 6d body and a 70-200mm f/4 IS lens.Inspiration
After wanting to go on a safari since I began photography it was incredible for it to actually happen. Throughout our time of scouring the grasslands, I wanted to make images that unique from the millions of wildlife images most people take. I was fortunate enough to have the rhino turn toward us in a way that almost gives him a personality.Editing
I tried not to over process the image so I merely warmed up the white balance, brought down the highlights to get detail in the sky and brought up the shadows. In my camera bag
My Lowepro Pro Tactic 450 backpack almost always has my Canon 6d, Canon 16-35mm f/4 IS, Canon 70-200mm f/4 IS, Canon M with an EF adapter, a Manfrotto Carbon Fibre Tripod, and a Yongnuo Flash. With the main lot are also a variety of memory card, batteries and various other photo related gadgets.Feedback
Go on a safari! Be sure to do extensive research on what the park you're going to has to offer and try to go as early in the morning as you can since the animals take cover after it starts to get hot. Be sure to respect the wildlife. If you try to disrupt them just to get an interesting photo its not genuine and won't feel honest. For example, as we approached this rhino it turned towards us and was feeling too crowded so rather than getting closer for a better photo we backed away and respected its space.
