Behind The Lens

Location
The photo was taken of the Mekong river in flood near Thipthani village, Baan Kwaun wan noy, near Nong Khai, Thailand. The fisherman and his boat are actually positioned over flooded fields.
Time
It was taken at 6.25 on 10th September 2013
Lighting
The blue shaft in the sky is from a cold front, the reflection of which aids the composition and breaks up and adds contrast to the warm colours of the sunset. A friend told me that one January evening there were 16 such shafts of light with a mist on the Mekong and 4 lines of Buddhist monks admiring the spectacle. It must have been quite a sight! I waited until the boat was in just the right position for a beautiful composition.
Equipment
It was taken with a Canon Powershot A3300IS which costs only about US$100. Just shows that you don't need expensive equipment to take award-winning photographs!
Inspiration
The colours but when the boat appeared, that really made the shot. Of course I took a few other shots but this is the best composition-wise.
Editing
No post processing has been done.
In my camera bag
The Canon usually accompanies me on my walks as it just slips so easily into the pocket of my shorts. However, I do have an Olympus DSLR E510 with 14-42mm, 40-150mm and 50mm f2 macro lenses, the latter being mainly used for my butterfly calendar shots. I also have a range of close-up lenses and Cokin filters, plus Olympus FL-50 electronic flash. I rarely use a tripod as I find them too fiddley! My 5 calendars may be viewed on www.calvendo.co.uk in the Product Gallery by searching under Mike Moran.
Feedback
ALWAYS CARRY A CAMERA! An investigative mind also helps, as you never know - that special shot may only just be around the corner, which this one literally was!
