Just one of the many remaining ancient pueblo walls at Chaco Culture National Historical Park in New Mexico. Planned and constructed on a grand scale over several generations between 850 and 1150 AD (or CE, meaning "Common Era") by ancestral Pueblo people, Chaco Canyon soon became the center of the puebloan world which eventually covered much of the Southwest. Using stone and mud masonry techniques unique for the time, these people, ancestors to the Hopi and Navajo, continued to build and expand their massive, multi-story stone buildings for over 300 years. In 1987, Chaco was declared a World Heritage Site.
