Behind The Lens

Location

Took this at Salk Institute in La Jolla, California.

Time

I took this shot during sunset so I could play with the shadows and bring out the silhouette.

Lighting

I wanted to create a shot where the surroundings brought out the center figures in the shot so I made it so the outsides were darker than the middle of the shot to bring out the two people walking.

Equipment

I don't really like to use tripods because I like to use the environment to get my angles. So I set my camera on the base of the fountain for this shot that got me this low angle with the people in the middle of the frame with the architecture.

Inspiration

I honestly was just shooting the architecture of Salk Institute and I saw two people walk in the frame and realized they would create a good perspective for the shot, so I guess I got lucky just as they walked by.

Editing

I took the shot to exemplify the layers of colors in the sunset and used Lightroom to bring out the light within the building itself.

In my camera bag

I go with my Canon 6D with my 24-105, and have my 50mm lens in my bag incase I want to switch it up.

Feedback

Honestly I would say don't go out expecting a certain shot you have in your head because most of the time things don't play out according to what you want. So just go with the flow and whatever comes into your frame will become the shot of the day. Just be flexible and have a couple settings in mind to capture different perspectives.
