Location
This photo was taken in Fiji on Tavewa island, I was visiting the Coconut Beach Resort for my Honeymoon.Time
The photo was taken just before sunset. My wife and had taken a walk around the bay to the point to watch the sunset and I took my camera in case it was a great one. As we reached the point we found a rock pool and sat and watched the sun slowly set.Lighting
The lighting was changing all the time for this shot. The light reflections from both the sea and the rock pool made for a tricky contrasting image along with the moving clouds. The seemingly 'purple' fringe around the rocks was caused by shadows and light refractions making it even harder to get a great shot.Equipment
This was shot with a Nikon D800 using a Nikon 24-70 f/2.8 lens at 24mm mounted on a tripod with a lee big stopper filter and a lee .6ND grad filter.Inspiration
The inspiration came from the location. When you are surrounded by an amazing scene all you want to do is capture that moment to recreate the feeling of the sun and the serenity of the location.Editing
I always shoot RAW so I can make adjustments later. Post processing was completed in Adobe Lightroom. I have a standard 'sunset' preset that I have created myself that fits my style and my images. This doesn't work for all sunset images but it gives me a good baseline. Generally I correct lens distortion, horizon, white balance and then make sure all my exposure settings along with colour and contrast are to my satisfaction before moving in to advanced colouring. In my camera bag
This was part of a round the world trip in which I travelled quite light (for a photographer!) I carry all my gear in a Dakine photo rucksack which is just brilliant. in there I pack Nikon D800, Nikon 24-70, Nikon 50mm, Lee filter system with 4 filters (big stopper, 3./.6/.9 ND grad), tripod and all the usual suspects in terms of remote shutter wire, cards, batteries etc.Feedback
Try and go that extra mile. My moto is 'No shot out of reach'. I like to go to the places/locations and the angles that other photographers don't. There are so many photographers out there all trying to compete that you have to standout and try and get images that others don't. This is not always possible and sometimes I purposefully get the 'postcard' image for my own satisfaction, but my general rule of thumb is to look for a different approach and a different angle.
