Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken last year during my trip to Edinburgh last year. I spotted this beautiful car parked near Calton Hill.

Time

I must have been in the early afternoon. I can't remember exactly because I took so many shot during my trip. The one thing I'll never forget is the short rain shower right before I took the shoot. The drops on the car fascinated me and so just took the shot.

Lighting

It was cloudy. So there was no direct sunlight which may cloud have caused any reflections, lens flares etc. It was a rather cold and moody scene, since it has rained only a few moments before I pushed the trigger. Its just some kind of daytime shot but the raindrops on the surface of the car and the car itself make it very special in my opinion.

Equipment

I kept it simple in matters of equipement. I just my Fuji X-T1 in combination with the Fuji 35mm f/1.4 lens. Its a great combination for street and travel photography.

Inspiration

Honestly..... I just was somehow caught in the moment. I just walked down from Calton Hill and saw this beautiful car with the nice details and the raindrops. It caught me right away, as I'm not used to see such cars in my hometown. Also the scene was quite perfect as the car was parked in front of a café and the front wheels pointed towards the curb. So you could see the classic rims. I walked around the car and took shot from all different perspectives, close ups and of the scene in general. So all in all my inspiration may have been to catch the moment, which special for me.

Editing

I processed the image in lightroom and made some general adjustments to white balance, highlights, shadows, contrast etc. By that time I was developing my one style and I was very much into film emulation. So I tried to give the image a film look by cutting of the blacks a little bit, desaturating some of the main colors like the blue of the car and adding grain and vignette. I also added a light blur to enhance the depth of field and blur the background a little bit more. I love blurred backgrounds as long as it looks realistic and not fake.

In my camera bag

Currently my bag is packed with some cameras of the X-Series from Fujifilm. I have two bodies the X-T1 and the X-E2 as some kind of backup or second body to avoid changing lenses so much. Speaking of lenses, I also use Fuji lenses. I have the XF 23mm f/1.4, the 56mm f/1.2 as prime lenses and the XF 16-55mm f/2.8 as a zoom lens. I love the 23mm f/1.4 and 56mm f/1.2 the produce great and sharp images. The 16-55mm f/2.8 is also a great lens with a nice and fast AF and very versatile. Additionally always have some ND-Fliters in my bag, to shot wide open in bright light or to make some long time exposures. Its a ND4, ND8 and ND10 filter. To round it up I carry spare batteries and a Vanguard tripod for long time exposures etc. I recently started to shot film on a Pentacon Six, so its also in my bag from time to time.

Feedback

If you like something or get caught by the moment, scene or anything just shot it. It doesn't matter if it is a full frame DSLR, a mirrorless camera or "just" your phone. Just push the button. Sometimes great motives or frames come out of nowhere. So just be ready to catch it somehow even if it is only a memory.
