This photo was taken in the Great Basin desert area of Utah west of Salt Lake City. I was driving to Wells, Nevada from Salt Lake in order to explore the Pilot and Humboldt Mountains (in preparation for a Pilot Peak summit trip this summer). As I was traveling through a particularly empty part of the desert I could see a parked train 1-2 mile or so off in the distance, sitting by a pool of still water (it had rained the day before). I decided to pull over and hike out to the train to see if there was a photo-worthy moment or two in the setting. I had hoped the standing water would be more reflective (it wasn't), but when I got there I did like the composition of this lonely, still, dusty train, the lifeless (and temporary) pool beside it, and the stark mountains in the distance. I captured this photo, and feel that it caught the loneliness and emptiness that is the desert. I hope you feel the same...
