This Southern live oak tree has a lot of history. A LOT!… They say it’s over 1,500 years old! – One of the oldest living things east of the Mississippi!. It’s called the ‘Angel Oak’ - not for any heavenly reason (though it seems it might…), but because the owner of the property in the early 1700s was the Angel family. Now it’s owned and cared for by the City of Charleston. It has survived serious fires and hurricanes (most recently Hugo in 1989) over the years. A few stats: 28 ft circumference, 67 ft tall, longest branch 187 ft, and over 17,200 sq ft of shade!… Didn’t have a model to show scale on this visit, but so you get an idea – the width of the main trunk of the tree is over nine feet!

It’s located on Johns Island, part of the city of Charleston, South Carolina. About eleven miles (and over a couple rivers) South from downtown. Definitely worth the drive if you’re ever in the area.

Image-wise, it was a bright cloudless afternoon. With sharp mottled shadows filtering through the branches. I just bracketed and used some HDR and Photoshop to help articulate the image (and remove a couple small signs).
