Location
It is in Val Gardena in the Italian Dolomites. You can take a couple of cable cars from Ortisei to get near this viewpoint. During the winter these slopes are used for skiing.Time
It was about midday. I had to catch a train to Milan later that day so I didn't have as much time here as I would have liked.Lighting
The morning was quite cloudy and the peak was obscured but luckily the clouds parted to enough to reveal the peak and paint the landscape in this gorgeous doppled light.Equipment
A Nikon d5100 with a 35mm fixed focal length lens.Inspiration
I'd seen photos from here before and wanted to visit it for myself. I knew it was near to Ortisei and the owner of my guesthouse told me exactly how to reach it. I visited the viewpoint a couple of times during my stay and tried a number of techniques, including long exposures with a neutral density filter to blur the motion of the clouds, however the panorama worked better because of the width it provides.Editing
I stitched four images to produce the panorama and used a curves adjustment to darken the clouds over the peak. I decreased the highlights to improve the contrast in the background clouds and increased the shadows in the foreground. In my camera bag
For this one I had the Nikon camera and prime lens, plus a telephoto and the kit lens. I have now upgraded to the Sony a7R with a wide angle lens which is much better for landscape photography. I also now own a Sirui carbon fibre travel tripod which is amazingly compact and light.Feedback
When you are shooting a scene like this which you know is going to be amazing then it's best to be patient and wait for the best weather conditions. When I stayed near here unfortunately there was an overnight storm so I wasn't able get any sunrise/set shots of this location, but was rewarded a day later when I returned and captured this image.
