Behind The Lens

Location

It's a skyswap composite of two separate images. Both photos were taken in nothern Wisconsin in 2014.

Time

The barn was taken early evening, during late summer. The sky photo was taken a few days later in the morning at a different location.

Lighting

The lighting was good with the setting sunlight to the right. But my cheap camera at the time, blew out the sky so it was originally a dull bland greyish white sky. It needed a skyswap to salvage this as a barn photo worth keeping.

Equipment

Both images were taken without flash, natural lighting, handheld. I used a Sony a3000 with a 55-210mm lens for the barn. And a Samsung note 3 was used to capture the sky. I didn't have another camera with me at the time, but I think I made both photos work well together.

Inspiration

Capturing and documenting the rural ruins of Wisconsin. View more at -www.facebook.com/ruralruins

Editing

It's a composite comprised of 2 separate images. I replaced the original dull sky with a more colorful sky. The colors of the foliage have been "autumnized" and blended together the best way I was capable of doing at the time this was processed.

In my camera bag

Having a good eye and editing skills are what matters the most. As for camera gear, I probably have more than I need. Photography hasn't exactly payed the bills, but it's the one thing I'm good at. Trouble is, so are millions of others.

Feedback

Just keep shooting, find your niche, focus on a genre that suits your liking. Work on composition, and also good contrasts of light and shadow, learn how to edit raw images. Learm different styles, experiment, find your own "look". Can't afford expensive equipment? Who can?! Work with what you have, learn every aspect of a camera (not a smartphone) and it can work to your advantage. Most importantly, have ambition and determination. Just like I did with this photo. It wasn't shot with expensive equipment. It was shot with an inexpensive camera with unfavorable lighting and not quite the right fine of year. I made this photo work, more from how it was edited. Not how it was taken or what it was taken with.
