Location
This photo was taken in Serra da Estrela, the highest mountain range in Portugal.Time
During the afternoon, approaching the golden hour.Lighting
In order to define the light rays, to register the different shades of light and to enhance the contrast between the light and the shadow, I narrowed the aperture to f/9.Equipment
Just my Canon 60D, with an 18-55mm f/9 lens.Inspiration
It had been raining the whole afternoon. I was in the middle of a car drive and I actually forced the driver to stop the car once I saw that beautiful sunlight shining between the clouds upon the mountains. I just had to capture it somehow. When I got to the edge, there were actual "pieces" of cloud, like cotton balls floating around and the village below was totally illuminated. The entire scenario was mesmerizing, it was truly a magical moment.Editing
Just minimal post-processing in Adobe Lightroom (contrast and shadow enhancement, mostly). In my camera bag
A Canon 60D, an 18-55mm lens, spare memory cards, the battery charger and, ocasionally, a tripod. I am still an amateur photographer, so I do not have much gear so far.Feedback
At least in Portugal, high places in Spring and Autumn days are the best for this kind of picture. Since the weather is particularly unstable during these seasons (it can be pouring rain for 2 hours in a row and sunny weather 5 minutes afterwards), it is possible to find this kind of scenario. You just have to be watchful and observe your surroundings!
