Behind The Lens

Location

The little girl was photographed in my studio on a dark background. I made her walk on a wooden planck in order to capture a natural behavior

Time

The background was captured in daytime during a walk. Different exposures were taken with a 14-24 mm lens, which then gives me the possibility to choose one exposure over another or to obtain a HDR image.

Lighting

For the little girl I used 2 soft lights (flash with umbrella), one on each side, directed towards each other with only diffused spill light illuminating the subject which creates a soft look and a backlight for the light in her hair.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D800 and a 24-70 mm for the little girl and 3 Einstein flashes. For the background i used a 14-24 mm

Inspiration

I love to make pictures, especially of children. Although not always easy to control during photo-shoots, they can be a real source of inspiration. When I’m patient and when I can build a trust relationship with the child, I increase the probability to capture their innocence on the camera sensor and the ultimate reward is then the catch of their deep natural beauty. Up to me afterwards to exploit my imagination and to imagine all kind of fairy tale stories.

Editing

Color and exposures were adapted to match the mysterious mood I was going for. Lights were added to the lantern and to the background in order to integrate the little girl in the background.

In my camera bag

I always have a Fuji XS100 in my handbag. This gives me the possibilité to always be ready to capture backgrounds or textures for further use Otherwise I use a Nikon D 700 + 24-70 mm lens and depending on if it’s an official photo shoot a 70-200 and/or a 14-24 mm

Feedback

The idea for this image popped up in my mind one day. So I did shoot the little girl accordingly. but sometimes I work the other way round. I have the footage and an idea pops up in my mind. Most of the times it is easier to have an idea beforehand and to direct the shoot towards the idea. Ideas can be found if you let your mind wander, observing people and surroundings, by fairy tales, or by choosing a couple of random words and see what the internet brings up. Sometimes I see an image on the Internet, which then over time leads me to a completely different project.
