StarStaX is an excellent, small and simple to use freeware program. Works on both PC and Mac machines.
It is great for quick and quality stacks; be it for its initial purpose of star photography or daylight shots. So you don't have to be into astrophotography to use it.

NOTE: An extraordinarily sturdy camera support is a must! I used ballhead-topped camera clamp fixed to a balcony handrail. The camera clamp is much less affected by wind and vibrations than an average tripod, since it has no flexibe elements. Be sure to fix the clamp to an equally solid base.
