Location
This photo was taken in upstate New York in the Catskill Mountains. Bastion Falls is located about one mile downstream from the more popular known Kaaterskill Falls, one of the highest two-tier waterfalls in New York.Time
Taken about midday, right along the horseshoe bend on Hunter Mountain, this gorgeous waterfall is easily visible from the road. There is a parking lot along up along the road and this is an easy walk to get a better view of the falls.Lighting
Secluded into a shady spot surrounded by trees on the mountain, natural light still gets through, but was very harsh at midday. Using the aid of the trees, I was able to block most of the harsh natural light.Equipment
This was shot on a Canon T2i with a Tamron 16-300mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC PZD MACRO Lens. Wanting to use a longer exposure to give the water a smoother effect and not having a tripod or monopod with me, I used the road's guard rail to help hold the camera steady.Inspiration
The beauty and power of this waterfall was breathtaking. I stood in awe for quite a bit staring at it before capturing a photo. Waterfalls have always amazed me. Some are small and just a trickle, while others are huge and powerful, but they're all beautiful.Editing
This actually had very little post processing on it. I did some color correction to bring out the more natural colors of the trees and rocks and brought out the sharpness in some of the rocks a little better. In my camera bag
I have since upgraded my camera to a Canon 7dMarkii, but still have my Tamron 16-300 along with a Canon 50mm f/1.4, Canon 24-105 f/4 L IS, and a Canon 70-200 f/4 L IS. I do not have any flashes and will also carry variable neutral density filters and circular polarizer filters for all lenses.Feedback
Remember a tripod! I was lucky there was something around (and there usually is) to steady my camera for a longer exposure. I took several different shots of this waterfall at varying exposures and angles to try to capture the best shot. You can never take too many and if you're using a digital, you can always zoom in on your review and decide whether or not to keep it or delete it. I tend to keep all my photos until I can see them on a bigger screen, but sometimes you don't have that option.
