I took this photo in Martin Place, Sydney Australia. It was for the Chinese New Year Celebrations. There were food markets surrounding a big lantern set up that lit up Martin Place. I was beautiful, the lights the smells and the atmosphere really highlighted the beauty of the shot.Time
It was around 9pm at night on a warm February night, the food stalls smelt delightful with the smells of authentic Asian cuisine. It was busy in Martin place and I had no tripod. There were seats scattered around the place under the lanterns. I stood on many till I found the right composition and lighting. I was so happy to see the final shot on the screen and know I finally did the lantern ceiling justice for its incredible beauty.Lighting
I did have to stand on seats to elevate myself away from any external light sources apart from the subject, but overall the lanterns did all the work with the lighting and the night was dark enough to show this.Equipment
I used my Canon 1200d SLR camera with a Sigma 70-300mm lens attached.Inspiration
I love Asian culture, the beauty and intricate designs of the lanterns. The celebrations in Sydney, Australia highlighted this, its theme was lanterns and had a wide variety of lanterns in the forms of the Chinese zodiac animals scattering the city. The atmosphere was amazing as well as the food vendors cooked a variety of dishes while street buskers entertained the crowds.Editing
No, this photo is straight from the camera, as a photographer, I aim to keep the images similar to what they were so the viewer can experience what I am experiencing. In my camera bag
I always have a variety of lenses for any event and a must is screen cleaning wipes. You never know when something will smudge on your lens or dust particles that stay there and make the photo look like it has weird speckles.Feedback
Be creative, take a particular shot from many angles till you find the right one and don't be disheartened when a shot doesn't work because as a photographer we are always experimenting. Also remember to have fun, when you are too hard on yourself your hobby becomes a chore and the creativity isn't there anymore.
