Location
This photos was taken from a balcony on my condominium during a new year’s eve fireworks. The location provided an unobstructed view of the fireworks with the top floors of the other condominiums in the vicinity as a background.Time
Midnight ushering in 1st January 2014. It was an opportunity for me to experiment on how take photos of fireworks.Lighting
This photo was really a product of experimentation. As a beginner trying to shoot fireworks, I really didn’t know what to expect to come out of the photograph. I know that normally the fireworks display during this time would be longer and the lighting colors and formations are so varied. So I took as many shots as I can even changing my camera setting to get a clear shot. So admittedly, this kinda came up with patience and timing.Equipment
The shot was taken with a Nikon D7000, Sigma 24-70 F2.8 IF EX DG HSM lens and a tripod. I set the lens 24mm at f/11 and speed of 4.0s.Inspiration
I always find fireworks challenging to shoot. You can never plan exactly what you want to come out in the photo. This unpredictability and variety of outcomes inspire me to be patient and just experiment. Being able to get a few shots right gave me that sense of accomplishment.Editing
I could no longer recall exactly the photo editor app I used but I did experiment with the use of mirror reflection app to create an abstract image. The mix of soft and hard lines and curves in symmetrical formation intrigued me.In my camera bag
I normally have just my camera and a zoom lens when I go around. However when I travel for holidays, I try to bring different lenses to cater to different situation - normally a wide angle, a macro and a zoom. With the availability of good quality mirrorless, I have recently invested on one which is lighter to bring along.Feedback
As a beginner and hobbyist, we don’t have the pressure of taking pictures with a clear brief and intent. To me photography is simply taking your own personal perspective of the moment. The more you enjoy doing it, the more you find yourself drawn to experiment. The more you experiment, the better your pictures become as you learn along the way.
