Behind The Lens

Location
I took this photo from the highway that runs beside the Espiritu Santo Mission in Goliad, TX. I was on my way to Port Aransas at the time, but when I saw this sunset, I knew I needed to stop and take this shot.
Time
It was late in the evening, around 5:30 in winter. The sunset was at its peak, and I was hurrying to get to Port Aransas for a mini-vacation from my job. As we passed the mission, I noticed the backlit church against the skyline. I pulled over to the side of the road, grabbed my camera, and got to work.
Lighting
Everything in the photo is naturally back lit by the sunset.
Equipment
At the time I only had a small Canon Powershot, and I thought it was the best camera I would ever own. I propped my elbows up in the window to stabilize the camera.
Inspiration
I was going through a stressful time in my life, and I had just taken up photography to help me cope with everything I was enduring. My job was really weighing me down, and I was taking a weekend at the beach. I was on my way to the coast when I saw this sunset. The way the crosses on the church's steeple stood out so clearly against the skyline reminded me of the Bible verse that says, "Joy comes with the morning." I felt very connected to that verse in the moment. I took this photograph feeling hope for the coming days. It was one of the first times that I realized I could use photography to find peace in my circumstances.
Editing
I did some cropping to adjust the perspective of the photo...at the time I knew very little about post-processing, so I did very little to my images.
In my camera bag
Since I took this photograph, my camera bag has greatly expanded. I now carry a Canon Rebel t5 and a Canon Rebel t6i. My go to lenses are a Tamron SP 150-600mm and a Tamron 70-300mm. I still have my Powershot, and I use it for certain types of photography, but my DSLR cameras are definitely my favorites!
Feedback
Be constantly watching your surroundings. If I had not been observant, I would have missed this moment entirely. Be careful too, especially if you are shooting on the side of the road. Be prepared. Know where your camera is and make sure it’s easily accessible in your car. You don’t want to be fumbling around to find it because you might miss the shot.
