Location
Off Maalea Harbor, Maui. The harbor is known to be windy and rough and quite often they have to cancel whale watch tours. It was windy that day so the spray off the tail is more impressive than usual.Time
This was taken in the morning.Lighting
It is always handy to use a polarizer around the water.Equipment
I was using my Nikon D600 and I believe this was a 200mm lens. The whale was very 'slap happy' as they say. It kept slapping its tail quite a bit.Inspiration
It was a whale watch tour.Editing
I usually only use basic post processing so exposure, contrast, white, black, etc.In my camera bag
A polarizer, an ND filter and a haze filter. I have a telephoto lens like my 150-600 Tamron or my 14-24mm wide angle Nikkor.Feedback
Use burst mode to capture moving objects. Make sure you are focused! I like using back button focus.
