Behind The Lens

Location

I took this sunset photo at Ericeira, Portugal. Ericeira is a small town just 50km northwest from Lisboa. It's best known around Europe for being a Surf destination.

Time

It was August, (August 12) the pinnacle of Summer in Portugal. It was 8,30 PM and I was waiting for this moment for quite a while. I knew that in five minutes I would had to wait 24 hours to try it again.

Lighting

As Ericeira is faced west I knew I would have perfect lighting conditions for silhouette and I started looking for some foreground interest which ended up being that tree.

Equipment

I shot this picture using a Canon 6D with a Canon 24-105mm f/4 L lens. I shot handheld for this kind of front lit scenes the shutter speed is usually very fast. In this case I shot @1/1250, f/4, ISO 100

Inspiration

I see myself more of a people photographer, but when you're faced with beautifull nature I guess you are drawn to it. Don't escape, just embrace!

Editing

I actually almost didn't post-process. The white balance was in Auto and the camera did a very good job handling a warm orange tone, so I didn't change it (5.700K). Just tweaked the Highlights for the sun and the Shadows for the silhouette, cropped vertical as I shot the image horizontly (it was a landscape after all) and export.

In my camera bag

I usually carry more than I need. Don't we all?! Seriously, I carry the Canon 6D with the 24-105mm, f/4 L, and the nifty fifty Canon 50mm, f/1.4. As accessories I use an Intervalometer (mostly used as shutter release), a Benro IT25 tripod and a Cokin ND X Variable Density filter.

Feedback

Don't look directly to the Sun (I guess this one is obvious ;)) but look just to the right or left of the Sun to take a meter reading. Shoot in Manual Mode for total control on the exposure. Remember to try to find some foreground interest and play with the composition. There are millions (billions?!!!) of photos of sunsets and the goal is to make one that the eyes of the viewer rests on for more than five seconds.
