Behind The Lens

Location
This was taken at the Gladys Porter Zoo in Brownsville, Texas. I love taking photos at the zoo because it's not crowded during the week and can spend as much time as I want. These cranes are so inquisitive and make a great subject.
Time
I took this photo around "high noon." It was a perfect day for photographing because it was overcast so even at noon there sun wasn't harsh but very subdued. I could do about anything that I wanted with the exposure.
Lighting
This photo was taken at an ISO of 800, shutter speed of 1/1250, f stop of f/7.1 with a focal length of 293mm. I love taken these cranes because they are so inquisitive and photogenic. Because it was overcast I bumped up the ISO to allow me a fast shutter speed because these cranes were especially active today. The cranes were so close to me that I only used 293mm focal length to fill the frame! When this crane tilted his head, as if to say, "what are you doing?" I told the photo. I thought then that it was perfect or as close to it as possible.
Equipment
I used a Canon 5D Mark III camera, with a Sigma 150 - 600 F5-6.3 Contemporary Lens with a Induro CF Tripod.
Inspiration
I was inspired by Joel Sartore's photos of endangered animals. He created some beautiful portraits of these animals. I thought that maybe the zoo would be a great place to capture some of the world's exotic animals that I might not be able to afford to go photograph them in their element.
Editing
The only post-processing that was required for this photo was to crop it a little bit.
In my camera bag
The first thing that I pack is my Canon 5D Mark III, I love the full frame that this camera body gives me. Then, I pack my Sigma 150 - 600 F5-6.3 Contemporary Lens that I have set up for Dynamic OS. This lens is tack-sharp all the way out to 600mm, I love it. Next I pack my Induro Carbon Fiber tripod with a Giotto MH-1000 head. This lens is a bit heavy and the tripod give me the added stability that my old bones and muscles need. As a back-up, I pack a Canon 70D body with the Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM Lens and the Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L Lens. I also throw in a couple of ND filters if I'm on the coast and might get some landscape shots. I learned a long time ago that it's better to not need a piece of equipment than to miss a once in a lifetime photo because I left some piece equipment in my house. I believe in the Boy Scout motto, "Be Prepared."
Feedback
Zoos offer the photographer a myriad of subjects to photograph. They are relatively inexpensive and as long as the photographer doesn't say these are wild animals, zoos are an awesome place to hone your photographic skills. I would recommend them to anyone looking to photograph some wonderful animals without spending a lot of money. If you can afford to go to Africa or wherever these animals are by all means do so but if you can't, zoos are an awesome choice.
