Location
I took this photo in an abandoned industry hall on February. The place was ideal because it has concrete flooring and walls and therefore a really low risk when working whit sparkles.Time
It took about 2 hours to take the several photos that make up the final image. We started at about 10pm and finished after midnight.Lighting
Since the image is a multiple exposure the lighting varies between shots. The main image (the model) was shoot using strobes and diffusors. For the sparkles the model was covered in fireproof clothing and the only light came from the sparkles themselves. The goal was balancing the intensity between the shoots to keep the sparkles visible not only on the background but also over the body.Equipment
I used my Canon 7D with the EF24-105IS-L lens on a Manfrotto tripod. The main shoot was lighted by three YN 560 flashes while the sparkles came from enlighted steelwool.Inspiration
I have seen many images where steelwool is used to create astonishing effects usually as landscape type photos. I wanted to combine the beauty of this kind of images with a portrait shoot.Editing
The post processing involves combining the multiple exposures and cleaning up color mismatches. Since I used the model himself as placeholder while fireing the sparkles the images were combined only using blending options and small corrections by fluidification to correct for the models movements. In my camera bag
My trusted Canon 7D, an Canon EF24-105IS-L lens, a Canon Canon EF50mm f1.8 lens, 3 flashguns (normally yongnuo) with theyre YN622 trigger system, several batteries for the flashes, filters and cleaning cloth.Feedback
Don't try this whitout proper preparation. Firewool sparkles are made of fused Steel and therefore really good at starting fires. Have fire extinguishers and water at hand. The rest is good preparation and patience.
