Behind The Lens

Location

This picture was taken on top of Victoria Peak in Hong Kong.

Time

I was here on a business trip and my meetings for the day ended around lunch. I then decided to do some site seeing with my free afternoon. I rode the peak tram to the top of Victoria Peak. This shot was taken in the mid to late afternoon.

Lighting

Even with the cloud cover the difference between the highlights and the shadows are great. I decided a 3 shot bracketed HDR would be the best approach to get good exposure in the highlights and shadows.

Equipment

This shot was handheld with a Nikon D800 and a Nikon 16-35mm f/4 lens.

Inspiration

This is a very famous "postcard" location to shoot Hong Kong. I decided since I was there that I wanted to create the same image with my own twist.

Editing

I performed the HDR post processing using Aurora HDR. Once the HDR image was compiled I finished the processing in Photoshop. My goal, always, when processing HDR photos is to get the details you want from the bracketed exposures but not have an "over-baked" image.

In my camera bag

I always have my Nikon D800, a Nikon 16-35mm f/4, and a Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8. All of this equipment is put into my Peak Design everyday backpack. When I can I carry my Gitzo carbon fiber tripod with ball head.

Feedback

If you are ever in Hong Kong I highly recommend getting up to Victoria Peak. It is easily accessible via the peak tram. If I could go back and take this shot again I would hope for some cloud cover and then take the shot at sunset when there is still natural light and the city lights are on.
